How PbO2 and PtAnode are Used for Electrochemical Ozone Production (EOP)?

In recent years, usages of ozone (O3) in the chemical industry and medical field including water treatment, deodorization, and disinfection have become of much interest because of its property as a very strong oxidizing agent that does not leave harmful residues such as haloforms.

So far, it has been found that Pt and PbO2 as the anode material show an electrocatalytic activity for electrochemical ozone production (EOP).

Due to PbO2 lower cost, supporting high current density without considerable wear and higher current efficiency compared with Pt as anode under the same electrolysis condition. Though PbO2 showed considerable efficiency for ozone generation, due to its possible leakage of toxic lead ion to the aqueous phase.

However, the Pt anode is very expensive, and the PbO2 electrode is easily broken and is not good for the environment. Therefore, the development of the anode material for electrochemical ozone production has been needed.
