Why Dimensionally Stable Anodes (DSA) are Effective in Dyes Wastewater Treatment?

Dyes wastewater contains a large number of dye pigments, these synthetic organic dyes contain toxic material. Their high chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels in wastewater create serious problems in the environment. Conventional methods for dye wastewater treatment include physicochemical, electro-coagulation, and biological treatment. Electrochemical processes considered a very effective method for the removal of synthetic organic dyes from wastewater treatment of mixed industrial wastewater.

The electrode is a crucial part of the electrochemical process. The right choice of an electrode material makes the process very effective and improves its efficiency because the mechanism is driven by the process as well as the degradation product depends upon the anode material.

The suitability of an electrode is dependent on three requirements. High efficiency; high stability and low production cost are the most desirable properties of electrodes. Several anode materials have been tested and reported to make an electrode effective for the complete degradation of organic pollutants. But some of them are either very costly, not efficient for degradation, present a rapid loss of activity, some release toxic ions, or show a limited service life. Aluminum, iron, and stainless steel are electrodes useful for electro-coagulation.

Dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) are titanium based electrodes containing conductive metal oxide coating. These electrodes have some desirable properties such as high surface area, high electrical and mechanical strength, and excellent electro-catalytic properties. Fabrication of DSA type electrodes can be done by using transition metals such as ruthenium, tantalum, iridium, tin, antimony, etc. This type of electrode generally gives partial oxidation of organics. Boron doped diamond (BDD), lead oxide are the material useful to give complete oxidation of pollutants.

Application of mmo titanium electrode in Effective electrochemical water treatment use conductive precious metal oxides as electrocatalysts. This oxide has excellent activity in Cl2 evolution. This Cl2 helps in the degradation of organic pollutants.
